Warning For Severe Cyclone ‘FANI’

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday evening issued a yellow warning for the Odisha coast, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall at places such as Boudh, Kalahandi, Sambalpur, Deogarh and other areas along the coastline.

Cyclone Fani is heading towards the Odisha coast with a wind speed around 200 kmph and is likely to hit south of Puri on Friday afternoon. Officials had earlier said that Fani can worsen into an “extremely severe cyclone” prompting the government to put the National Disaster Response Force and the Indian Coast Guard on high alert.The Odisha government had declared holiday at schools and colleges in the state on Tuesday in anticipation of the oncoming cyclonic storm.

According to sources, with the cyclone Fani getting intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm,the Indian Navy today has started preparations to supply aid in case of any emergency.

Tourists in West Bengal’s coastal areas along with the fishermen have been asked not to venture near the sea between 2 May and 4 May. Severe cyclonic storm ‘Fani’ which is expected to trigger heavy showers in the coastal districts where wind speeds may go up to 110-115 km per hour, officials and weather experts are reported to have said.
