The West Karbi Anglong district, particularly agricultural lands located within Hawaipur and West Rongkhang revenue area, is facing a severe drought-like situation, endangering the agricultural activities that sustain approximately 90% of the population.
The expanse heavily relies on agricultural activities such as sugarcane, vegetables, paddy, wheat, and other horticultural items. Typically, after cultivation, water should remain in the fields for at least forty days to two months for the crops to mature and ensure the health of the crops. However, this year, such conditions have not been met.
Compounding the issue, not a single irrigation scheme is available under Hawaipur Mouza under Donkamukam revenue circle till date. Even though some systems are listed in government records, they remain non-functional, leaving farmers without the crucial support they need to sustain their crops.
Local farmers are facing significant challenges as their crops suffer due to the lack of irrigation and other necessary agricultural facilities.
The situation calls for urgent attention from both local authorities and the government to provide immediate remedial measures and long-term solutions to address the water scarcity and ensure the livelihoods of the affected communities.
