The situation in the Northeast may turn extremely volatile if stern action is not taken to restore peace in the region,” Gupta said
SILCHAR: Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha’s president for Assam and the Northeast Biswadeep Gupta, on Sunday, vociferously condemned the Mizoram-based students’ body Young Mizo Association (YMA)’s alleged act of issuing a warning recently to 91 non-Mizo businessmen to close their shops in that state and sought the Centre’s intervention for safety and security of those people who have allegedly received the warning.
The YMA had on May 15 allegedly issued a warning to 91 non-Mizo businessmen, mostly of the Bengali and Hindi communities, to close their shops in Mizoram. As per various organisations, the 91 shops were closed after the warning and other non-Mizo shop owners are fearing of facing a similar situation.
In a statement on Sunday, ABHM’s president for Assam and the Northeast Biswadeep Gupta condemned the YMA’s act and claimed the Mizo body issued the warning as a reaction to the violent incidents in Manipur, which is on the boil for many days. “Mizoram is getting involved with illegal immigrants issue of Manipur and in order to please them (Manipur), they are trying to play a role that not only betrays the federal structure but also interferes with other elected state governments’ space,” he stated.
“This incident cannot be seen separately and we need to stand with people who are victims of identity politics. The situation in the Northeast may turn extremely volatile if stern action is not taken to restore peace in the region,” he said. He demanded the safety and security of non-Mizos and their property in Mizoram and sought the Centre’s intervention in this regard.
