Breakthrough in research and innovation, initiation of major new Schools and Centers as well as courses in line with the New Education Policy, the addition of new infrastructure, collaboration with academia and industry, maintaining a high place in NIRF and QS ranking, and record-high placements, major outreach programs, working closely with State Government and northeast region, the IIT has moved forward in every domain.

Research and Innovation

  • Researchers of IIT Guwahati developed a technology to provide iron, arsenic, fluoride, and other contaminants-free drinking water to the rural people of Assam with the help of their various prototype units and innovative technology. Several such units are being installed in Assam and other northeastern states.
  • IIT Guwahati Invented Biodegradable low-cost Composite Wound Dressing Film.

This material, based on the integration of a synthetic polymer, is non-toxic in nature and creates a moist environment that would enable the body to heal on its own through endogenous enzymes, according to recent research. The laboratory-scale development was found to be at least 50 percent economical in comparison with similar commercial materials.

  • IIT Guwahati Researchers reported Novel Behaviour of Electrons in a Conductor. The study is expected to lead to exciting outcomes in the future and will have implications in several technologies. This will open up a new avenue of research in the direction to understand the conducting properties of electrons.
  • IIT Guwahati Researchers made fundamental contributions to memory architectures by preventing redundancy in data values and improving slow and frequent writes in the multi-core processor systems
  • IIT Guwahati researchers developed a ‘Nanometer Thick Superhydrophobic Coating’ material to modify ordinary cloth or silk masks that maintains its comfort but offer better protection against aerosol-driven infections such as COVID-19.
  • A group of researchers from IIT Guwahati successfully developed hydrogel-based electrodes that could enhance the performance of an energy storage device.
  • As a very innovative solution to address the environmental crisis, IIT Guwahati researchers have developed a novel highly porous and water repellent superhydrophobic cotton composite material containing Metal-Organic Framework (MOF), which can absorb oil selectively from the oil-water mixture.
  • IIT Guwahati Researchers developed a novel water repellent material that can be used for real-time monitoring of human movements. The material developed is flexible, non-stretchable and environmentally friendly that can detect low strains with high sensitivity.
  • IIT Guwahati researchers have succeeded in developing novel materials that can use sunlight to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.  These materials are much cheaper than the ‘noble metals’ currently used and could lead to cost-effective solar-powered hydrogen generators.
  • IIT Guwahati researchers developed hybrid perovskite-based solar or photovoltaic devices to produce electricity from the sunlight, which are highly efficient, cost-effective, easy to manufacture, and easily recyclable.

New Infrastructure

  • The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated a new ‘Centre for Disaster Management and Research’ (CDMR) at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati.
