Bapuram Tokbi Village in Assam’s Bokakhat area, Golaghat district, stands out as a remarkable example of cleanliness, discipline, and sustainable living. This rural community has gained attention for its unwavering commitment to hygiene and its firm stance against substance abuse, setting a model for others to follow.

The village’s dedication to cleanliness is evident in its everyday practices. Residents maintain spotless surroundings, with each household using bamboo dustbins placed at their entrances for proper waste disposal. Weekly cleanliness drives ensure the entire village remains pristine, reflecting a collective sense of responsibility and pride in its environment. This systematic approach to hygiene stems from deeply ingrained community values that prioritize health and well-being.

Every household follows a strict cleanliness policy, ensuring that homes and surroundings remain tidy and pollution-free.

Beyond its clean streets, Bapuram Tokbi has also taken a strong stand against drugs and alcohol, fostering a sober and disciplined way of life. This effort is bolstered by the influence of the Lokhimon faith, a spiritual movement founded by priest Lokhon Engti Hensek in the village over 700 years ago.

The faith, which now has over 60,000 followers and 113 temples across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, emphasizes not just spiritual growth but also social reform. It promotes equality, kindness, and a harmonious coexistence with nature—values that resonate in the village’s drug-free lifestyle and eco-conscious practices.

Despite challenges like poor road infrastructure and limited access to basic services, the residents remain steadfast in their pursuit of a self-sustaining, dignified existence. The village’s major temple serves as a cultural and spiritual hub, reinforcing unity and collective action. These efforts have made Bapuram Tokbi a symbol of what grassroots initiative and shared purpose can achieve, even in the face of adversity.

In a nation where rural areas often struggle with sanitation and substance abuse issues, Bapuram Tokbi Village offers a compelling blueprint. Its blend of cleanliness, sobriety, and community-driven governance highlights how traditional values and modern aspirations can align to create a healthier, more sustainable society.
