Imphal: The 127th birth anniversary of Netaji Subash Chandra Bose in Manipur took on a subdued tone this year, marred by the ongoing conflict in the region. Unlike previous years, the state government observed the celebrations at the Indian National Army (INA) martyrs memorial complex in Moirang town, Bishupur district, with a restrained approach on Tuesday.
During World War II, the INA/Azad Hind Fauz flag was first unfurled on April 14, 1944, at Moirang by Colonel Saukat Hayat Malik, commander of the Bahadur Group, designating the area as its headquarters. This location served as a strategic base for Japanese soldiers and their allies to plan war tactics against the Allied forces.
L Sadhana Devi, curator of the INA War Museum, a unit under Manipur’s art and culture department, explained that the anniversary was marked with a low-key program due to the prevailing conflict.
Following the advice of seniors, the commemoration involved locals from Moirang, especially members of the local INA advisory committee, paying floral tribute to Netaji’s statue. A committee leader acknowledged that the volatile situation led to a simple and subdued observance of the anniversary.
Notably, Moirang residents had previously urged the withdrawal of the “war criminal” label associated with Netaji Subhash by the United Nations and Commonwealth of Nations.
