A momentous chapter in Assam’s history unfolded as the 175th birth anniversary of Veer Sambhudhan Phonglo, the valiant freedom fighter of the erstwhile North Cachar Hills, now Dima Hasao district, was commemorated with great reverence and enthusiasm on Sunday. The highlight of the celebration was the grand unveiling of his statue at Assam University, Silchar, a significant initiative undertaken by the Barman Dimasa Kachari Development Council, Assam. Gracing the occasion as the chief guest, Minister for Education & Tribal Affairs (Plain), Dr. Ranoj Pegu, had the distinguished honor of unveiling the statue, marking a proud moment for the region.

The event witnessed an august gathering of dignitaries, including Cabinet Ministers Nandita Gorlosa and Kaushik Rai, along with Assam University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Rajive Mohan Pant. Several eminent personalities, including MLA Nihar Ranjan Das, Cachar BJP District President Rupam Saha, and community leaders Nikhil Barman, Dilip Nunisa, Rupesh Barman, Reena Singh, and Rupam Nandi Purkayastha, were present, reinforcing the historical and cultural significance of the occasion. Their collective presence underscored the unwavering respect and admiration for the legacy of Veer Sambhudhan Phonglo, whose indomitable spirit and sacrifice against British colonial rule continue to inspire generations.

A vibrant cultural performance by students followed the unveiling, encapsulating the rich heritage of the region and adding to the grandeur of the event. The celebration then transitioned to the Bipin Chandra Pal Auditorium, where a solemn yet spirited assembly was convened in honor of the fearless revolutionary. The distinguished guests were welcomed with the traditional Uttariya, symbolizing deep respect and gratitude.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu eloquently highlighted the immense contributions of Veer Sambhudhan Phonglo to India’s freedom struggle. He emphasized that Phonglo’s unwavering defiance against colonial oppression serves as an enduring inspiration. Lauding Assam University for taking the initiative to install the statue, he remarked that with the presence of the portraits of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and other national icons, the addition of Phonglo’s statue further enriches the institution’s historical essence. Dr. Pegu reiterated the Assam government’s steadfast commitment to holistic development and drew a parallel between this vision and the transformative leadership of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, which is now being carried forward under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to preserving the contributions of tribal leaders and ensuring their legacies remain a guiding force for the future.

In a significant announcement, Dr. Pegu revealed that the Assam government has decided to establish a hostel for students in Dholai, fulfilling a long-pending request made by MLA Nihar Ranjan Das. Additionally, in a landmark initiative to honor and safeguard tribal heritage, a Tribal Museum will also be dedicated to Assam University, serving as a repository of the rich and diverse cultural traditions of indigenous communities.

Speaking at the event, Minister for Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs, Mines and Minerals, and Barak Valley Development, Kaushik Rai, underscored the importance of recognizing and celebrating the unsung heroes of history. He stressed that preserving their sacrifices and contributions is vital in fostering a sense of pride and belonging among future generations. He commended the Assam government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of indigenous communities and its concerted efforts to ensure their rightful place in the state’s developmental roadmap.

Minister for Sports, Youth Welfare, and Minority Development, Nandita Gorlosa, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the role of cultural preservation and education in empowering tribal communities. She reassured that the government remains steadfast in its mission to foster inclusivity and uplift marginalized communities. She further reiterated that cultural heritage must be preserved as a symbol of identity, unity, and progress.

The collective voices of the dignitaries reinforced the paramount importance of unity, mutual respect, and the need to uphold the valor and sacrifices of Veer Sambhudhan Phonglo.

It is pertinent to mention here that the grand commemoration not only paid tribute to one of India’s bravest freedom fighters but also reaffirmed the Assam government’s and Assam University’s commitment to preserving history, fostering development, and nurturing the aspirations of future generations. The event stood as a testament to the enduring spirit of resilience, cultural pride, and the relentless pursuit of progress, inspired by the legacy of Veer Sambhudhan Phonglo.
