News media is considered the 4th pillar of democracy. The news media must be fearless. They have to present the true facts and must not be affected or biased in any case, enunciated Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha at the 4th State Conference of Tripura Electronic Media Society organised at Agartala Press Club yesterday.
The Chief Minister said the present government is media friendly. Earlier, the media personnel had to struggle in different ways. The government is sincere about addressing the problems of the news media and media personnel. He also said the news media and the media personnel are the main steering force in a democracy. They play an important role in protecting democracy. They also play an important role in shaping society by presenting the truth. The Chief Minister called upon the news media to come forward against drug addiction. They must raise their voices against drug peddlers. Only then the government will be able to build a Drug free and addiction free Tripura with their cooperation.
Information and Cultural Affairs Minister Sushanta Choudhury in the programme said, the present government cares for the media and is media friendly. The present government has taken different initiatives for the development of the news media. Target has been taken to more accreditation cards to the media personnel soon. ICA Minister said, earlier, that the ICA department’s budget for the news media was about 40 crore rupees. At present, the budget has been increased to 65 crore rupees. The ICA department is providing advertisements to every new media house without any bias. He said, the present government also cares about the safety of the media personnel. Considering their safety, Press jackets are being provided to the media personnel and this will be continued in the future also. The ICA Minister said, emphasis also has to be given to presenting true facts on electronic media. This will not only increase the dignity of the electronic media but also the viewers will not be misled.
The welcome speech was delivered by the General Secretary of Tripura Electronic Media Society Surojit Pal. Others present in the programme were Secretary of Agartala Press Club Pranab Sarkar, senior journalist Sebak Bhattacharjee, and Chairman of Bhowmik Trust Sanjay Pal.
