Guru Purnima, a spiritual tradition in Hindu religion dedicated to spiritual and academic teachers, who are evolved or enlightened humans, ready to share their wisdom, with very little or no monetary expectation, based on Karma Yoga. The festival is celebrated on the full moon day (Purnima) in the Hindu month of Ashadha (June–July) as it is known in the Hindu calendar.
Guru Purnima is celebrated because it is considered that Gurus are the connective link between disciple and the immortality. The day marks the advent of period named as Chaturmas. The festival was revived by Mahatma Gandhi to tribute to his spiritual guru Shrimad Rajchandra.

There are other stories related to celebration of Guru Purnima. It is believed that in yogic lore, Guru Purnima was the day that saw Shiva become the Adi Guru, or the first Guru. Buddhists celebrate this festival, as on this day their religion founder, Lord Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh. Jain religion followers also have their own significance of this day, as the 24th ‘Tirthankara’, Mahavir Swami after attaining salvation made his first disciple ‘Gautam Swami’. Above all, the day of Guru Purnima is considered auspicious for those who are willing to give a start to a spiritual learning of any kind.
