Recently villagers took unique action against cattle thieves in Bensing Timung village of Borpothar locality, Bokajan subdivision without involving the police. The villagers explored the issue of cattle theft on their own accord and identified the cattle lifters. They detained the whole gang of thieves spread in different villages and punished them according to Karbi customary law.

The prosecuted cattle lifters were identified by the villagers as Rajen Bey (27)Rupon Ronghang(22) Dorsing Terang (27), Bhimson Ronghang (21) and Nogen Ronghang (25). 

  The conspiracy of the gang was busted after the pair of bullocks belonging to Rupsing Timung vanished on the night of October 27. After a meticulous and painstaking search, the villagers retrieved the bullocks from Dimapur city of Nagaland. The gang confessed under pressure that they sold the cattle to a trader of Dimapur, who sold the pair for INR 75,000/-, however, ultimately the plowing pair of cattle was recovered.      

The official village headmen Bensing Timung village, Kangbura Rongpi constituted a panel of adjudicators consisting of senior residents of the village; Kulising Timung, Mouzadar, Pinpo Ronghang and the headmen of the village formed the jury for the formal trial of the case in public. The panel of judges after discussing and hearing the sides, declared the punitive measure, uttered castigation and issued a firm warning to the offenders. The adjudicators released the gang after obtaining assurance from them that they will pay the price of the stolen cattle and shall never indulge in such crime in the future.
