Silchar witnessed an inspiring and thought-provoking event on Tuesday as internationally acclaimed photographer Vicky Roy headlined a talk show on Photography and Disaster, organized by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Cachar. The event, held at the Ceremony Banquet Hall on Circuit House Road, was inaugurated by Yubaraj Borthakur, Additional District Commissioner & CEO of DDMA Cachar.

It must be mentioned that Vicky Roy, known for his extraordinary work documenting marginalized communities and people affected by disasters, captivated the audience with his powerful stories and insights. Sharing his journey to becoming a globally recognized photographer, Roy highlighted the resilience of the human spirit through his lens, bringing to life the untold stories of those impacted by natural disasters.

During his address, Roy emphasized the critical role that photography plays in raising awareness about environmental and humanitarian crises. He discussed the ethical responsibilities of photographers working in disaster-stricken areas, underlining the importance of telling stories with sensitivity and purpose. His reflections on the devastating effects of climate change, human displacement, and the importance of documenting these crises struck a chord with the audience.

Besides, the event also provided a unique platform for over 200 participants, including state and central government officials, volunteers, NGOs, media representatives, and local photography enthusiasts, to engage with Roy. Among the attendees were youth from Silchar’s slum areas, who left inspired by Roy’s message of using photography as a tool for change and empowerment.

Earlier, Shamim Ahmed Laskar, District Project Officer of DDMA Cachar, delivered the vote of thanks, marking the conclusion of an enlightening session that encouraged budding photographers to use their craft to contribute to society.
