Nandakumar was instrumental in successfully opposing an idea mooted by certain vested parties to hand over the Santhei Natural Park to a commercial agency through a long term lease deed, the content of which was never made known to the public of Andro including using of the instrument of RTI Act.
After an unfortunate incident in Andro on the forenoon of 10th April 2020 arising out of a complaint against the discriminatory distribution of drinking water to the public during the nation-wide lockdown and curfew on account of Covid-19, a group of armed men mostly from outside Andro, in around 20 vehicles led by an individual with armed escorts came in the night of the same day and terrorized the resident by firing shots from their weapons and vandalized the houses of 13 individuals in six Leikais, including those of one Asheibam Nandakumar, who was not at all present in the first incident.
The vandalisation, therefore, cannot be seen as a mere reprisal of the first incident but a deep rooted conspiracy to terrorise all those who oppose certain vested interests. This was stated in a joint statement issued by Manipur Cultural Integration Conference and Human Rights Initiative, today.
Stating that A. Nandakumar is a member of the Manipur Cultural Integration Conference and Human Rights Initiative, it echoed that Nandakumar was instrumental in successfully opposing an idea mooted by certain vested parties to hand over the Santhei Natural Park to a commercial agency through a long term lease deed, the content of which was never made known to the public of Andro including using of the instrument of RTI Act.
Armed men in groups would suddenly arrive in Andro in the night for two consecutive days after the incident of the night of 10th April and terrorized the people, violating the conditions of the ongoing lockdown and curfew. The Manipur Cultural Integration Conference and Human Rights Initiative said that it condemns any violent incidents and urge the State Government, especially the Home Department to ensure the safety and security of the victims of Andro and enforce the conditions of the lockdown and the curfew.
The organisation urged that those who violate the curfew to terrorise the public must be apprehended and penalized as per the law of the land and urge the State Government to do so in the larger interest of law and order and ensure proper combating of Covid-19.
The state government must also withdraw the security provided to the ring leader immediately and any government officials associated with the terrorist acts must be enquired into and terminated from service. Even those of the government agencies who failed to prevent violent acts must be taken to task for their inability to maintain the curfew as a dereliction of duties and efforts to frame false charges against the victims must be stopped immediately.
Further, it is also appealed to the people of Andro to ensure that the age old tradition of unity in the village of Andro is maintained and divisiveness created by certain vested interest in the name of politics or otherwise is defeated united the statement states.
