Caring the patients with cancer at home along with social rehabilitation is an important aspect of health care services
A project named Model Village of Palliative Care-Mayong was inaugurated by Dr. Amal Chandra Kataki, Director of Dr. B Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI), Guwahati on 19th November 2022 at Mayong in Morigaon district. The project will be implemented in the nine villages of the greater Mayong area covering a population of about seven thousand. The project will be run by the Department of Palliative Medicine and Department of Medico Social Work of BBCI in association with Volunteers of Palliative Care from Mayong. An inaugural program in this connection was held in the premises of the Mayong Anchalik Sports Association.
In his inaugural speech, Dr. Kataki emphasized the importance of community involvement in cancer care. Caring the patients with cancer at home along with social rehabilitation is an important aspect of health care services. He also applauded the enthusiastic involvement of the people of Mayong in the project. Dr. Kataki further announced the donation of Two Oxygen Concentrators for the benefit of the people of the Greater Mayong area in the inaugural program. He also donated a few books to the Library of Mayong Anchalik College and Mayong Anchalik Sports Association.
According to Dr. Kabindra Bhagabati, In-charge of the Department of Palliative Medicine at BBCI, the main activities of the project will include care for terminally ill patients with cancer in all four aspects of care, so that the patients can lead a fruitful life till their death. Home visits, distributions of free medicines, and psychosocial counselling will be done free of cost on a regular basis. Various hands-on training programs will be conducted on a regular basis for the financial rehabilitation of people from these nine Villages covered under this project, further informed Dr. Bhagabati.
The inaugural function was attended by the Principal, of Mayong Anchalik College as a Special Guest. In his speech, he urged the people of Mayong to come forward and join hands in the project for the greater benefit of the people in that area.
Hari Prasad Borah, the Working President of the project has appealed to the people for extending their helping hands to the project activities.
Earlier, Tarun Sonowal of the Department of Medico-Social Work, BBCI gave an overview of the project in the meeting.
