Myanmar Medical Council cancels doctor’s license in context of sporting bikini

Nang Mwe San a top student at a Myanmar High School, fulfilled her parents’ wish and enrolled herself in a medical school despite of the fact that she wanted to be a “sexy model.” She did became doctor by 22, even though being a physician was never her dream.

After several years of treating patients and working for non-profit medical groups, Dr. Mwe San began shooting commercials and posting racy images of herself on Facebook.

The Myanmar Medical Council, couldn’t handle the staid doctor and hence cancelled her license. The council, which oversees the country’s doctors and hospitals, ordered her in January to stop posting her bikini clad images and to delete them from her page.

She ignored the order and as a result, this month the council informed her that her medical license had been revoked. Dr. Mwe San, who is now 29 said in an interview that there is a lot of sexism in her country. According to her, women to have higher positions is not acceptable and people judge women by what they wear. They are not even comfortable with women wearing trousers.

The skirmish over her photos has attracted much attention, serving as a distraction for a nation that is waging wars against ethnic groups and is accused of brutal ethnic cleansing of its Muslim Rohingya population in Rakhine State.

Dr. Mwe San’s case has also spotlighted the nation’s deeply ingrained patriarchy and its woefully underfunded, understaffed health care system.
