The National Institute of Technology Delhi (NITD)held its 3rd Convocation on Saturday, August 06, 2022. The ceremony was held at Vigyan Bhawan. The institute celebrated the accomplishments of 793 graduates, including 34 Ph.D., 567 B.Tech., and 192 M.Tech. degrees. The Institute awarded the President’s Gold Medal (8), the Director’s Gold Medal (29), and Institute Silver Medals (20) to graduate students with exceptional academic records. Anand Kumar, the founder of the acclaimed Super-30 programme, was conferred a Doctor of Philosophy degree, honoris causa.

Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, was the chief guest at the ceremony. He sent a message to the graduating students and NIT Delhi family as he couldn’t make it to the convocation for unprecedented reasons. In his message, he appreciated the students, faculty, and academic performance of NIT Delhi for having 16 sponsored projects and more than one thousand (1139) publications in national and international journals, conferences, and books of repute. He linked the progress of the nation with the efficacy of our ability to innovate and provide efficient solutions for good governance. He showed full confidence in the ability of NIT Delhi, its students, and faculty members to strengthen the spirit of innovation and active research for the socio-economic growth of the country.

The MoS for Education, Subhas Sarkar, was the Guest of Honour for the ceremony. He began his speech with an invocation to the students, emphasising the importance of remaining calm in the face of information overload – quoting from Bhagwat Geeta, he said, “… just as the ocean remains peaceful by the incessant flow of waters from rivers merging into it, likewise the sage who is unaffected despite the flow of desirable objects all around him attains peace and not the person who strives to satisfy desires.”

He emphasized the holistic approach to teaching and learning promoted under NEP. He wished the graduates well and shared thoughts of wisdom and life lessons with them, quoting Sri Aurobindo.

He rooted for analytical ability, conceptual clarity, and powerful communication skills. He concluded his speech by congratulating the students, their parents, faculty, staff, and the Director of NIT Delhi.

The Director, Prof. (Dr.) Ajay Kumar Sharma presented the Director’s Report and highlighted the important milestones for the year 2022 for NIT Delhi. He proudly announced—”This has been an exciting year for us; we have realised the dream of moving to our permanent campus after functioning from the transit campuses for over a decade.” Prof. Sharma also announced the start of BTech programmes in Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Civil Engineering (CE), as well as an increased intake in BTech (CSE) programmes beginning in the academic year 2022-23.

At the convocation, the noteworthy placement track record was highlighted. In 2022, NITD students were hired by some of the most reputed companies like Adobe, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, Samsung R&D, L&T, Deloitte, Intuit, and Swiggy. One of the students received a package worth 55 lac rupees per annum. The overall placement rate is 96.5 percent.

While presenting the Director’s report, Prof. Sharma also congratulated the graduating students, faculty, and staff for the smooth organisation of the convocation ceremony. He thanked the Chief Guest, the Guest of Honour, and all the other dignitaries for their time and effort to grace the ceremony with their presence. Addressing the students, Prof. Sharma, talked about the better utilisation of available resources and emphasised a positive attitude and innovative thinking. “I am optimistic because I know that our students will be an unstoppable force—a force to be reckoned with—in constructing a healthier and better society,” he said.

It has secured the 194th position in the NIRF ranking for 2022, a testament to its faculty and students’ academic prowess despite the hardships of the global pandemic.
