Tirupati : “Integrating Needonomics with Rajiv Gandhi’s vision offers a pathway to a more sustainable, equitable, and technologically advanced society as India navigates the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century,” opined Prof. Madan Mohan Goel, three times Vice Chancellor, including at RGNIYD Sriperumbudur, and the propounder of the Needonomics School of Thought.

Prof. Goel, who is a superannuated Professor of Economics from Kurukshetra University, made these remarks during an online round-table Zoom meeting on ‘ Rajiv Gandhi: Vision and Mission for Transforming India in the 21st Century’,’ organized by the Academy of Grassroots Studies and Research of India (AGRASRI) Tirupati. Dr. D. Sundar Ram Director AGRASI delivered the welcome address and introduced the panelists including Professor M.M. Goel.

Speaking on the topic “Integrating Needonomics into Rajiv Gandhi’s Vision for Transforming India in the 21st Century,” Prof. Goel argued that the adoption of Needonomics—an economic philosophy centred on need-based consumption—could significantly enhance the realization of Rajiv Gandhi’s vision by promoting sustainable development and social equity across the nation.

Rajiv Gandhi’s foresight in advocating for a modern, inclusive, and empowered India can be more fully realized by adopting Needonomics as a guiding economic philosophy, explained Prof. Goel.

In contrast to consumerism and greed-driven economies, Needonomics emphasizes living within means, ethical consumption, and sustainability, resonating deeply with India’s traditional wisdom, which has always championed a balanced life and minimalism, told Prof. Goel.

He also highlighted the considerable scope for improving efficiency, sufficiency, and equity in the economy, urging stakeholders to become street SMART (simple, moral, action-oriented, responsive, and transparent).

Prof. Goel believes that by embracing the principle of needonomics, India can achieve economic growth and holistic development that honours its cultural heritage while embracing the future in the 21st century.
