Her this act inspired people to have faith despite the absence of direct leadership, .
She edited the Congress party’s monthly magazine ‘Inquilab‘. In order to make her object reach maximum people; she started a journal called ‘Link’ and also wrote a column in the newspaper ‘Patriot’. She actively participated in the Salt Satyagraha in 1930. It was then that she was arrested for the first time, on the charges of being a nomad.
This remarkable lady was elected as the first Mayor of Delhi in 1958. She was awarded the International Lenin Peace Prize in 1964. Padma Vibhusan which she received during her lifetime in 1992 and the Bharat Ratna, posthumously in 1997. ‘Grand Old Lady’ of Independence Movement in 1998, a stamp commemorating her was issued.
