A total of 47 students studying in 12 standard of Slopeland Public School, Khongjom, Thoubal district in Manipur , around 36 kilometers from Imphal, ran away from the school  on September 18. Police along with child activists rescused all the students without any casualties from different areas of the state.

After hearing the reports, parents and guardians gathered at the school premises enquiring the whereabouts of the students. There was also a slight commotion between the parents and the school authority due to the failure on the part of the school authority to file a missing report to the police.

However a police team along with staffs of Childline Thoubal and Social Welfare department, Thoubal appeased the agitating parents and took control of the situation.

Later around 6 in the evening the students were rescued with the help staff of Childine Thoubal and Social Welfare department, Thoubal. Subsequently, the students were taken for medical checkups and produced before the Child Welfare Commission, Thoubal.

According to unofficial source, the students were reported to have fled the residential school due to an alleged hostility with certain teacher.

According to the principal of the school Nahakpam Nabulin, the students ran away around 12.30 at night. The school authority were aware about the incident around 2 in the morning. He informed that the school authority immediately search for the students after which some students were rescued within a short time added that the school authority have faith that the missing children will return before evening.

Stating the reasons why the school authority did not file a missing students report to the police, he said that similar incidents already happened in the past which makes the school authority believe that the students will return safely.

This incident followed the unfortunate incident of a class 8 student of the Standard Robarth  Higher Secondary School  found hung to death from her dormitory bed.
