The civil society body Dr Shyama Prasad Mookherjee Memorial Swartha Suraksha Parishad in a memorandum to the Prime Minister has demanded recognition of Manipuri, Maithili and Gujarati as Classical languages.

In a memorandum, the President of the Parishad, Haran Dey thanked the Prime Minister for recognising Assamese and Bengali languages as Classical languages and said that the demand for recognition of Maithili, Gujarati and Manipuri is very much genuine.

Haran Dey in his letter wrote, ‘there is a demand for recognition of Maitheli, Gujrati and Manipuri languages as Classical language and I believe that this demand is a genuine one’.
