The Sivadol is the tallest temple dedicated to Lord Shiva that stands on the banks of the Sibsagar Lake. It is the tallest Shiva temple in the whole of India with a height of 59 mt from the ground. The temple is capped by eight feet high golden dome that displays the magnificent craftsmanship of the Ahom artisans. During Shiv Ratri , huge number of devotees flock the place.
Sibsagar is a historic town in Assam and was the capital of the Ahom kingdom for about 100 years. Sivsagar is also known as Shivasagar, the ocean of Lord Shiva. This city is surrounded by the Dehing rainforest, where the Dihing(Brahmaputra) and Lohit rivers meet. The pride of Sibsagar is the presence of historical monuments.
As Sibsagar does not have any airport within the city the nearest airport is Jorhat about 55kms from the town. The nearest railhead to Sibsagar is at Simalguri that is located about 16 km from the town. The NH 37 runs through Sibsagar and continues till Dibrugarh further up in the state. The town is thus well connected to the other parts of the state as well as the region.
The most significant attraction of the town is the astounding Sibsagar Tank surrounded by three important temples namely, the Shivadol, the Vishnudol and the Devidol. Charaideo is located about 30 km from the Sibsagar town. It is famous for the burial grounds of Ahom Royal family reflect the excellent architecture and skill of the sculptors and masons of those days and the ancestral gods of the Ahoms.
Gaurisagar tank was built about 200 years ago. The tank is surrounded by three temples dedicated to Goddess Durga. Devotees from all over Assam and other parts of the country come to this place to offer their prayers.
Joysagar Tank, a man-made tank, built by Ahom king Swargadeo Rudra Singha is the largest man-made tank in the country and covers an area of 318 acres. The temples are built around the tank are Kesavarai Visnu Dol or Joydol, Devi-Ghar, Baidyanath Shiva Dol, Sri Surya Mandir, Ghanashyam Dol or Nati-Gosai Dol and Ganesh Mandir.
Sibsagar also boasts of the Kareng Ghar situated 15 km from Sibsagar.
This Seven storey structure is also known as the Talatal Palace of which three storeys are underground.
