Kumar was the first actor to receive Rajat Kamal Award also known as National Film Award for Best Actor for Chiriyakhana and Antony Firingee in 1967. Among many awards he received, one of the notable award was the Best “Greatest Actor” MAHANAYAK award for the film, Amanush from the Government of India on 25 November 1975.
Uttam Kumar was born on September 3, 1926 as Arun Kumar Chatterjee. During the days of the famine in Bengal in 1943, he had to take up the job of a minor clerk at Kolkata Court.
His first film was Mayador in 1947 which was never released and finally first release was Drishtidan in 1948. Uttam Kumar loved music, he played the harmonium, he composed songs and he had his own production. He was also at the centre of many controversies, especially those involving his female co-stars such as Suchitra Sen, Supriya Devi and Sabitri Chatterjee.

Uttam Kumar wrote a book Amar Ami before his death. By some strange coincidence, on the day he died (July 24, 1980), the manuscript of Amar Ami went missing, only to be recovered much later and published in the form of a book by Saptarshi Prakashan.
Often hailed as the one-man industry, Uttam Kumar dominated Bengali cinema for three decades. His organisation, Shilpi Sansad, which provided security for retired actors is one such example that he cared for the industry.
